The Great Outdoors

Jon and I have been a little baffled lately at our boys' seeming loss of interest in playing outdoors here recently. Both of us when young practically lived outdoors. Did we really mess up by allowing too much media when they were younger? Have we scarred them for life? Am I being overly dramatic and has it just been the weather?

When we first cut back to no TV during the weekdays at the beginning of the year, they seemed fine, but lately we've had a season where they get bored. And boredom is just not allowed in this house!

After lots of prodding, encouraging and suggestions of play I think we are out of this season!

Many an day will you now find my boys doing this.

Who needs a sandbox when you have this?

And this pile of broken cinder blocks that have been a thorn in my side (the view out my back window) have created many hours of play. When am I ever going to learn to let go and see the beauty of such treasures? I vow that I don't ever want a perfect looking yard and house where kids don't have places to get dirty and play.

This is the current castle they have built. Kaden says that is their work and they have to do it every day to make money like Daddy. He says he is working to be a king and then Will will have to obey everything he says.

More than anything we enjoy hearing Mimi and Grandpa calling out across the pond to where my boys play and being able to share our daily lives with them. (I know they treasure this as well).

Have I ever mentioned how blessed we are to be able to live where we do? ;-)

Do you have any fond memories of playing outdoors?

As a boy growing up in OKC there was no place like the outdoors. My friends and I would play until dark and start as early as we were up in the morning. I understand the techno draw but think kids will miss out if they never go outside. There is nothing like seeing our grandkids coming and going out of the woods around here.We also love seeing them play ball, riding their horses and playing dress up. Treasure is right. Dirk

I saw some pirates just the other day by the pond :). I heard them first. It brings a smile to my face and JOY to my heart!! Can't wait for more little ones to be running around here soon! ~Mimi (Mom)

This is why we can't wait to sell our house and find some land. You can't do any of that living in a neighborhood of 500-750 houses and living right at the only entrance/exit to the neighborhood. We have one of those small "lots" with a single 6 foot tree...haha! We want 5 acres and big trees and room for our kids to explore. How fun!?!?

I just pray that it happens soon...before it is too late for our oldest (7) to enjoy!
